UNC Charlotte School of Nursing Recognizes Distinguished Alumna for Outstanding Professional Service and Commitment to Improving the Lives of Others

The UNC Charlotte College of Health and Human Services’ School of Nursing Alumni chapter recently honored Mrs. Lynn Dobson as the recipient of its 2014 Distinguished Alumni award. The award recognizes a UNC Charlotte nursing graduate for outstanding service to the School of Nursing or for recognition of exceptional achievement or state/national/international leadership in practical/clinical excellence, education, administration, research, or professional writing.

Dobson, a graduate of UNC Charlotte’s Bachelor of Science in nursing and Master in Education programs, has dedicated more than three decades to the nursing profession. She is recognized as a passionate leader who has been a long-time advocate for children and vulnerable populations. Throughout her career, working in both North Carolina and South Carolina, Dobson has been involved in cancer care, Hospice, youth ministry, therapeutic child care programs, mission work and camps for special needs children.

“Lynn is an amazing person. A true humanitarian who exemplifies the spirit of the nursing profession,” said Dr. Dee Baldwin, Associate Dean and Director of the School of Nursing. “She has not only made exceptional strides in the field but has made an indelible mark on communities both locally and globally. We are truly proud and honored to recognize her as one of our distinguished graduates.”

Dobson has served as a Clinical Instructor in Pediatric Nursing at UNC Charlotte and is recognized as one of the three faculty members in the School of Nursing who led the effort to establish a nursing clinic for women and children at the Salvation Army. One of her major accomplishments in the Charlotte region was the development and direction of a summer program called Camp Care, which provides a camping opportunity for children with cancer. In 1992, she was honored with the Jefferson Award for her work with Camp Care. The Jefferson Award is given by WBTV and other community organizations given to individuals who enhance the community with their contributions.

Dobson was also instrumental in fund raising to deliver two ambulances to the Eleuthera (Bahamas) Emergency Preparedness Group and developing a seminar for cancer survivors on the island. Today, she continues to participate in Mission trips to the Bahamas and in 2010 received, along with her husband, the Outstanding Contribution to South Eleuthera Emergency Preparedness Organization award. She has also been honored by the Cancer Society of Eleuthera for her development of a seminar for cancer survivors.
