The Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies (AD-RGS) in the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) functions as the Dean’s senior research and graduate studies executive officer and as such reports directly to the Dean. The AD-RGS is responsible for providing leadership to the research enterprise in CHHS, including supervising all Research Administration Office (RAO) staff and graduate students and mentoring faculty and graduate students related to internal, foundation and external research funding (i.e., opportunities, proposal development and grants management). They serve as the Dean’s liaison to the University’s Office of Research and Economic Development, with partnering Colleges, the Charlotte Research Institute (CRI), and with healthcare industry entities.

The AD-RGS works collaboratively with the Dean, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Director of the School of Nursing, Director of the School of Social Work, Chair of the Department of Public Health Sciences, the Chair of the Department of Applied Physiology, Health and Clinical Sciences, and the Director of the School of Data Science on a number of College initiatives as required by the Dean. The AD-RGS also works closely with other central College staff such as the Dean’s Executive Assistant, the Business Officer, the Development Officer, the College OneIT liaison, the Director of Communication, and the Alumni Engagement Officer. They support a rigorous on-boarding program for new research faculty and the College Biostatistics Core, Chair the College Research Council (comprised of unit-selected research focused faculty), and work with faculty to promote/facilitate a comprehensive research seminar program for the College.

The AD-RGS is also responsible for the support and oversight of all masters, graduate certificate and doctoral programs housed in CHHS. They regularly convene, support and facilitate the College Graduate Council which is comprised of all graduate program directors and designated faculty involved in various aspects of graduate education. The AD-RGS is the primary liaison for the College with the UNC Charlotte Graduate School, coordinating and leading all efforts in the College related to graduate reporting, advising, securing and distributing assistantships, and graduate curricular revision or proposals.

Research Office Operations

The CHHS Office of Research reports directly to the AD-RGS. In consultation with the Dean the AD-RGS sets research policy and procedures for the College; monitors all pre-award (proposal development, budget construction) processes for the College; supervises and conducts annual evaluations for all pre-award staff and graduate student assistants; serves as the primary liaison to the UNC Charlotte Division of Research and Economic Development and the CRI; attends or delegates attendance at Research & Economic Development meetings; disseminates research updates to the College via newsletters, reports and regular communications; designs and facilitates research enhancement activities for faculty and students in the College (seminars, mock review panels, referral to appropriate statistical or research design support, access to large data bases, etc.) and evaluates their impact on research productivity and success; AD-RGS is responsible for the interpretation, compilation and dissemination of research-related reports; is responsible for research compliance and works cooperatively with the College’s Data Security Officer; manages and distributes Research Enhancement Funds; performs other duties and responsibilities as delegated by the Dean.

Faculty Support

At the request of the Dean, the AD-RGS may assist in the recruitment and interviewing of potential administrators, faculty, and research/adjunct faculty for the College. They are to serve as a ready informal and formal mentor and resource for all faculty seeking or managing external and internal funding. They will facilitate and support interdisciplinary research opportunities on and off campus.

Other

Like all other administrators in the College, the AD-RGS will teach one course per year to keep in touch with students and the faculty experience. They will also continue to act as an inspirational role model for faculty by continuing to pursue their own scholarship. The AD-RGS should be a member of the Graduate Faculty and may elect to serve as major professor or committee member on masters or doctoral student committees. The AD-RGS plays an important role as the Dean’s representative to a spectrum of research entities on campus including the Urban Institute, the Institute for Social Capital, CRI, and the Internal Review Board, as well as the wider constituency of community agencies/industry interested in College’s research mission.

Appointment Criteria

The AD-RGS must meet the criteria for the rank of Professor at the time of appointment and may hold a tenured position in any appropriate academic unit within the College. They must have a demonstrated record of faculty and graduate student mentoring and direct experience in graduate education.
