Director of Community Engagement
The College of Health and Human Services’ primary strength is its deep commitment to, and
expertise in improving the health of communities.
The College is committed to developing close, strategic collaborations with individuals, agencies and
institutions in the Charlotte region and beyond, aspiring to become known for our public
engagement and community focus. Faculty, staff and students are actively involved in addressing
emerging needs related to health and human services in our community. In turn, our community,
alumni and health service agencies reciprocate by providing placements, internships, and
employment for our students, and opportunities for outreach and research for our faculty.
Primary Purpose of the Position
The Director of Community Engagement for the College of Health and Human Services engages
proactively on behalf of the CHHS Dean with community partners to promote the spectrum of
activities within CHHS that enhance the social, economic, civic and cultural vitality of the region.
The Director will support, sustain and expand innovative, reciprocal and mutually beneficial
community relationships that will enable the College to create new knowledge and approaches to
improve community health status, provide meaningful experiences for students, facilitate
transdisciplinary research and service opportunities for community agencies, faculty and students
and to contribute to economic viability.
The Director is responsible for initiating and managing relationships with alumni, the health and
social service industry, non-profit and for-profit agencies and other community partners,
representing the College of Health and Human Services and its needs to the external community,
attracting resources for our current and emerging priorities in a manner consistent with University
policies and priorities.
The Director reports to the Dean of the College of Health and Human Services and participates in
the overall planning, implementation and oversight of administrative community outreach on behalf
of the Dean and other academic units as directed by the Dean. S/he works most closely and in
consultation with the CHHS Director of Communication and the CHHS Executive in Residence.
S/he is a member of the College’s Administrative Leadership Team, also working closely with
Associate Deans, the Dean’s Executive Assistant, Department Chairs, School Directors, the College
Business and Finance Officer, and Executive Director of Academic Technology. The Director also
supports the community activities as needed by CHHS outreach leaders (such as the Colvard
Distinguished Professor, Director of HInORA, and the APHI Director). S/he coordinates external
events and those related activities of the College’s events staff in concert with the Dean’s Executive
Assistant and other events staff.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
Works with the Dean and College senior and administrative leadership to develop the College’s
Strategic Plan with particular emphasis on community engagement. {5%}
Advises/engages the Dean and related staff and executes on strategies to engage the broader
community of constituents in activities supported through the College with the aim of cultivating
additional resources and partnerships spanning the educational, research and outreach mission of
the College of Health and Human Services; works with the Dean to establish CHHS as a community
outreach resource/hub in the health and human services arena; participates in the identification of
external funds (grants/other) to support activities; participates in grant writing as required. {35%}
Serves as the primary coordinator of external (community based) educational, business and
recognition events, including the identification and coordination of engagement of sponsors, and
exhibitors as well as speakers/presenters; coordinates community constituent participation in annual
donor recognition event (scholarships) and 49er sports events on behalf of the Dean. {30%}
Serves as the primary coordinator of the College of Health and Human Services’ College
Community/Industry Advisory Board; sets agendas with the Dean; responsible for all details related
to Board meetings (scheduling, speakers, food, venue, agenda, support materials, presentations),
minutes/follow-up. Serves as the Dean’s liaison to the HI-PSM Advisory Board, working closely
with the Graduate School on planning and executing advisory board meetings; participates in and
contributes to other community advisory board activities affiliated with the College as requested by
the Dean. {10%}
Serves as the Dean’s liaison with the Division of Advancement (Development), working closely with
the Dean and the College’s Major Gifts Officer and Director of Corporate Giving on Capital
Campaign priorities, managing and growing the College’s donor pipeline, and in the stewardship of
donor relations as deemed appropriate by the Dean and Development; is the Dean’s representative
on other fundraising activities such as Giving Green; Manages operational aspects of student
scholarships, supporting the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs; Serves as the Dean’s liaison with
the Division of Advancement (Alumni Affairs), working closely with the Dean and Alumni Affairs
to more deeply engage our Alumni in College activities, events and priorities. {20%}
Serves as the Dean’s liaison to all research/outreach Academies within the College, with UNC
Charlotte Metropolitan Studies, Extended & Continuing Education, the Urban Institute, other unit’s
directors of external/community relations, and to the Office of International Programs. {5%}
Independence/Administrative Authority
The Dean delegates authority to the Director of Community Engagement to pursue community
based activities as described above without direct consultation with the Dean. Any stewardship,
donor relations, alumni or other activities related to development/fundraising will be vetted with the
Dean who will direct next steps with the Division of Advancement. The Director will frequently
represent the Dean at community, corporate and educational events, serving as her spokesperson.
The Director will manage her/his own operational budget (amount to be determined).
Guidance/Supervision
The Director is directly supervised by the CHHS Dean who will solicit collaborative input on
Director’s activities and performance by members of the College’s Administrative Leadership Team.
Human Resources Responsibilities
The Director provides input to the Dean on the recruitment, hiring and performance appraisal of
events and other administrative support staff {as needed}; trains staff as requested by the Dean.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
Minimum of an earned bachelor’s degree and 5 years of community based experience; demonstrated
experience working within non-profit agencies and educational entities in program promotion,
development, donor cultivation/stewardship and fundraising (including within a university setting);
high level organizational skills; exceptional communications skills; ability to lead teams; ability to set
and meet organizational goals; demonstrated understanding of the mission of a major university and
an understanding of health and human services disciplines.
