Associate Dean of Academic Affairs
College of Health and Human Services

General
The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs reports directly to the Dean and is responsible for providing academic leadership for curriculum and academic program development and evaluation for undergraduate programs. S/he provides administrative oversight to the college’s Advising Center and to the CHHS Student Success programs and college’s assessments and accreditation processes. S/he works collaboratively with the Dean, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs, the School Directors, and Chairs of the Academic Units in the development of the College evaluation plan. The CHHS Advising Center and Director of Student Success and Assessment report directly to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs convenes and manages the College’s Academic Affairs Council (comprised of Unit Leadership). S/he performs other duties and responsibilities as delegated by the Dean.

Curriculum
The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, in collaboration with the Dean, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs, the School Directors, Department Chairs and faculty, supports the establishment of priorities related to academic program planning, development, approval, implementation, and evaluation for undergraduate programs and serves as a resource for emerging doctoral programs. S/he serves as ex-officio member to the College Curriculum Committee.

College Planning and Evaluation
In collaboration with College Unit Leadership, s/he updates the College Evaluation Plan (part of the College’s Strategic Plan), periodically assesses programs/student outcomes, assures data are collected, analyzed and accurate, and that all needed reports are distributed to appropriate Units and governance groups. S/he provides leadership for developing/evaluating strategic plans for the Office of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, which includes the CHHS Advising Center and the College’s Student Success Programs. S/he monitors student enrollments, enrollment trends and is responsible for any needed updates to the College’s enrollment management plan. S/he oversees SACSCOC accreditation compliance as well as specialty accreditation processes.

College Operations
S/he manages the CHHS Advising Center Director and the Director of Student Success and Assessment, including corresponding budgets, student/parent orientations, follow-up surveys of graduates, procedures and policies in academic advising and SACS-COC compliance and specialty accreditation. S/he monitors processes related to student recruitment and admission, and evaluates progression and graduation data and trends. S/he monitors policies/procedures related to students, initiates reviews, and communicates and interprets policy to faculty/students. S/he prepares program-related student demographic reports for the Academic Units and for the Dean and ensures that Unit and College student handbooks are routinely updated and available to students. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs handles all undergraduate student academic appeals and grievances that rise to level of the Dean’s Office. S/he coordinates clinical agency requests, negotiates agency contracts/agreements for student learning, and assures compliance. S/he coordinates course schedules and monitors student enrollment in courses/programs. In consultation with the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies and the Unit Chairs/ Directors, s/he organizes the summer course schedules, academic catalogues, and student recruitment materials. S/he is administratively responsible for the implementation of the College’s Student Success Programs. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs serves as the College representative to other units in the University responsible for undergraduate academic policies governing admission, progression, all aspects of undergraduate student assessment, retention and graduation. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs develops, reviews, tests and updates the College’s Resilience Plan (aka Continuity of Operations Plan/COOP), working with the support and guidance of the UNC Charlotte Division of Business Affairs and ensures compliance with all expectations associated with the published Resilience Plan (COOP).

Faculty
At the request of the Dean, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs may assist in the recruitment and interviewing of potential administrators, faculty, and adjunct faculty for the College. S/he collaborates with each Department Chairs/School Directors in the development of class schedules, assessment of faculty teaching assignments, and agency requests for clinical and/or field experiences, and reports progress in these areas to the Dean of the College.

Other
S/he may be ex-officio to College committees on related to curriculum and to student affairs. S/he is the College liaison to University units responsible for accreditation and assessment, distance education, summer programs, course scheduling, and admission, progression and graduation of students. S/he demonstrates a high level of integrity and follow through and the ability to supervise and develop staff professionally. S/he assumes other administrative responsibilities as delegated by the Dean.

Appointment Criteria
The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs must meet the criteria for faculty appointment at Associate Professor or Professor rank and must have a minimum of five years College level administrative experience.
