Dean of the College of Health and Human Services

General
The Dean of the College of Health and Human Services serves as the chief administrative and executive head of the College and is directly responsible to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of North Carolina Charlotte. The Dean’s responsibilities cover five areas: Academic Leadership, Management and Personnel, University and Community Citizenship, Promotion of Diversity and, Development and Alumni Relations. Goals related to these are to:

  • Understand and support the ongoing and emerging needs and aspirations of the faculty in each of the four academic units in the College, as well as the needs of the broader community related to public engagement
  • Continuously assess the trajectory of College accomplishments in the domains of teaching, advising, research and public engagement and the alignment of those with College and University aspirations and goals
  • Effectively manage the human, financial, physical infrastructure and operational capital of the College and continue to strategically align these resources with on-going and emerging Unit, College and University priorities
  • In supporting the mission of the College, work from a platform of strategic collaboration and entrepreneurship, both internally (within the College and University) and externally (within the health care industry, non-governmental entities, government agencies and the community, including with donors)
  • Serve as an effective ambassador and spokesperson for the College and its Units, faculty and students to our internal community as well as to our external stakeholders (business and industry; alumni and donors; potential students; health and social service agencies; city, county and state government; private foundations and federal funders)
  • Foster and expect a College-wide culture of collegiality, respect, understanding and acceptance for all members of the community
  • Establish clear and high expectations related to excellence in teaching, advising, student success, research/scholarship, collaboration and public engagement.

Personnel

The Dean directly supervises a variety of personnel and sets standards for and evaluates their performance: the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, the Assistant Dean for Inclusive Excellence, the Director for Business/Finance, the Director for Communication, the Director of the School of Nursing, the Chair of the Department of Applied Physiology, Health and Clinical Sciences, the Chair of the Department of Public Health Sciences, and the Director of the School of Social Work. The Dean sits on a Board of Directors made up of other College Deans who oversee the Director of the School of Data Science. The Dean interacts in a leadership capacity with centralized representatives from Alumni Affairs, OneIT, UCOMM, and the Division of Research. The Dean provides recommendations to the Provost on all faculty reappointment, promotion and tenure decisions in the College. The Dean receives and considers recommendations for all faculty hires within the College, and participates as appropriate in candidate interviews.

College Planning and Operations

The Dean is the chief strategist and planning officer of the College and works closely with the College A-TEAM to develop plans for the immediate and long-term development, improvement and strengthening of the College related to teaching, research and public engagement. Working with the A-TEAM, the Dean directs and delegates activities necessary to assess progress in the three part strategic plan of the College.

Working with the Director for Business and Finance, the Dean is responsible for the development and management of the College budget and expenditures, and in allocating funds to the various Units within the College to meet operational needs. In addition, the Dean prepares and submits recommendations related to salary adjustments to the Office of the Provost, when those opportunities arise.

The Dean serves as an ex-officio member on all College Committees and delegates that responsibility as appropriate to members of the A-TEAM.

The Dean manages all space allocated to or occupied by CHHS faculty, staff and students and works cooperatively with the University Space Management Committee and Academic Affairs to convey space needs and changes within the College. The Dean is directly involved with, or delegates authority to members of the A-TEAM, any capital projects and renovations affecting College programs.

College, University and Community Leadership

The Dean provides leadership through the personal example of her/his own accomplishments and through the effective and systematic communication of College accomplishments and progress to all College-affiliated stakeholders. The Dean is the formal liaison between the College and its academic, research and community engagement programs and the broader University, as well as with Community and Industry partners. The Dean leads further through the initiation and facilitation of expanded opportunities for students, staff and faculty with a broad array of stakeholders, both internal and external to the University. In concert with the College’s major gift officer (a shared position with CoED), the Director for Communication (a shared position with CoED, supervised by UCOMM, and the Alumni Engagement Officer (supervised by the Office of Alumni Affairs, the Dean works to increase the visibility of College programs as a means to garner programmatic and financial support for students and faculty. The Dean serves on University-wide and community committees as appropriate, and as one of seven Academic Deans on the Provost’s Council of Deans. The Dean convenes and manages the College’s Community Advisory Board.

Appointment Criteria

The Dean of the College must meet the criteria for faculty appointment at the rank of Professor in one of the disciplines in the College; have a successful record of teaching, scholarship and community engagement; have a record of professional service, and demonstrate significant experience as a faculty and administrator in higher education.
